Between Quay and Kitchen explores the transformation of an approximately nine-hectare harbour site in Wilhelmshaven’s Südstadt into a vibrant, mixed-use urban district on the waterfront. The project asks how housing, gastronomy, urban food production, workplaces and public spaces can be combined into an everyday neighbourhood of short distances.
The harbour location provides not only a strong spatial quality, but also the basis for a new productive identity. Local supply systems, shared facilities and small-scale production are to be linked with low-carbon mobility, climate-resilient open spaces and high-quality public realms. Students are asked to develop urban design concepts that rethink density, mixed use and public life while responding carefully to the existing structures of the Südstadt.
The student competition understands the site as an urban testing ground for a future-oriented harbour district in which living, food, production and social life are spatially and programmatically intertwined.
